Original from Central and Southern America, about 65 species were discovered in the past. The genus Cattleya was named in 1824 by John Lindley after William Cattley, who successfully cultivated specimens of Cattleya labiata that were used as packing material in the shipment of other orchids. As one of the oldest and widely cultivated orchids, Cattleya attracts people with their large, showy flowers, as well as the delicate fragrance, they are so called “the king of orchids”.
Generally, cattleya can be classified into two categories: the monofoliate Cattleyas that occurring with few large flower opening through the winter to spring; the bifoliate Cattleyas that contribute with lot of small flowers from late summer to autumn. Two type of Cattleya are often hybridized by breeders in able to select better hybridization from progenies.
