The genus original from south, east and southeast Asia (Taiwan, Japan, China, Philippines, Australia, New Guinea, New Zealand etc.) that the name comes from Greek dendron (tree) and bios (life). Dendrobium are either growing on a tree, or occasionally growing over a rock. They have adapted to a wide variety of habitats, from high altitudes in the Himalayan to tropical forests and even to the dry climate!
They are often develop pseudobulbs, which unite into a long reedlike stem. The axillary flower buds develop into short flower stalks with one or two terminal flowers.
