Oncidium is a genus that contains about 330 species. This is a complex, difficult genus, with many species being reclassified. This genus was first described by Olof Swartz in 1800. Its name is derived from the Greek word "onkos", meaning "swelling". This refers to the callus at the lower lip. However, for most people, Oncidium is rather called “the dancing lady” refers to the shape of whole flower structure.
Most Oncidium are epiphytes, although some are lithophytes or terrestrials. They are widespread from tropical America to high altitudes in Brazil. They usually occur in seasonally dry areas.
Oncidium is one of the most important export flowers, mainly for cut-flower markets in Japan.
